My friend just got his MSF and M1 license in the prospect of shopping for a ninja 250 off craigslist
He wants me to come with to check it out.

Any quick advice? check tires, check front fork (for wheelie abuse), test drive it....

The bike has about 7000 miles on it. I'm the second owner. The first owner put very light scratches on the right side. Minor. I have re jetted the carburator and put on a custom exhaust. Run clean and strong. I have title in hand. Cash in hand to test drive.

i was one craigs for like a month not too long ago... a bit of patience goes a long way in getting a good deal.

mo told me once to check the chain slack to see how well the make is maintained. I didn't. But doesn't sound like a bad idea

Great link, also don't go alone. Be aware of spammers. I remember in the Bay Area there was a string of robberies where buyers would show up with cash and you get the idea. Good luck to your buddy.

-Bring a cashiers check not cash, so if you got robbed, you can cancel the check.
-Tell the guy to make sure he does not start up the bike until you get there, you want to start it up COLD, make sure it starts easily when cold.
-Examine top of triple tree, look for fading, signs of wear.... this is usually an indicator that the bike was stored outside (may not be a bad thing, but isn't ideal)
-Look for scrapes on stator cover and clutch cover (this means the bikes been down), check frame slider for wear if they're installed.
-Check bikes oil level, low oil level probably means the bike wasn't taken care of.
-Ask when the last oil change was done, if it was recent. Check the color of the oil, it shouldn't be dark and should still be transparent.
-Start bike and listen for any metallic rattling noises, these are from valves, if they're heard - valve's need to be adjusted (this is unlikely in such a new bike)
-Make sure all signals, horn, switches and other do-dads work.
-Check chain slack, generally it shouldn't move more than 1 inch in either direction. If slack is fine, look on swing arm and see how much chain life is left on the indicator.

Thats all i can think of for now. Newer sport bikes are pretty bullet proof, you shouldnt have too much to worry about.

Im going with what Aimen said. Pretty solid.

Phi, what I was telling you was that if you look at the chain and check for proper slack and lubrication that you can tell if the owner cared for the bike because its such a frequent thing youre supposed to do. Tells you more about the owner really.
