So the unbelievable happened the other day....
Riding home from carlsbad....my bike starts making these weird noises and shuts down completely.
Take it to the mechanic....and the cam chain totally blew....messed up my entire motor

So I'll be in search of a d675 motor and will be bikeless for a while....

Repairs will probably cost me around $400 after buying a motor.

*sigh*

If you need a weekend wrencher to help you work on the bike, let me know.
Also, that thing is pretty damn new, doesn't it ahve a power-train warranty?

Just buy yourself a complete motor and just do a swap. However it sounds much easier then it is I expected mine to take less then two days with how little time I could give it and its been down for 4 months.

The bike is an 06 so nope warranty ran out 2 years ago. There's so much damage on the inside of the engine that my mechanic said it'd probably cost 4 grand to rebuild the motor. I found a motor in sf for 500 and will be driving up next weekend hopefully to check it out.

Motor in sf came off an 07 d675 with 3k miles on it so sounds like a good deal.

i think i'll just let my mechanic put it in once i get it....he's a lot cheaper than other places around here ($60 / hour) i think...

Ask the owner of the motor you are going to look at if it still has fluids. I reccomend running at least a cold compression check on it, so you know if your buying crap or not. Compression testers by actron can be purchased at napa and pep boys for about 30 bucks and it will come with the proper adapter. Remember when using an adapter tighten it onto the tool well or you will get it stuck in the motor, this happened to me twice. As for paying a mechanic, its a drop in swap I def would not pay 60 dollar an hour to swap them unless he quotes you no more then 3 hours. I dont work in a shop and I had a swap done in about that time.

he quoted me at about 4 - 5 hours to remove the old motor, and put the new one in.

as far as i know....the motor was drained before being put into storage in the garage. definitely will need an oil change and new filter when I get it.

i'll look into the compression tester....seems like you actually need the motor hooked up
this motor is not hooked up to anything at all

here's some pictures of the engine i'll be checking out:

This is the description:
I have a engine for sale. It came with my 675 when i bought it. It is a 07 with about 3k on the clock. And was running when pulled. It was to be a spare motor for my 06... but the 06 never blew. It does not come with air box or harness. Any whoever buys it will have to reuse their stator. All the case covers are in great shape.

The guy sent me a compression test of the engine before it was pulled (probably doesn't mean anything now....but at least i know there were no leaks when it was pulled)

each cylinder showed a compression of around 158-160psi.
leak test showed no leaks either.

Those compression readings mean almost nothing unless you 1. trust the guys word or 2. are standing there watching the test happen. It is a far trip if you buy a motor that turns out to be bad. You should be able to crank the motor over for compression just using a battery and the proper lead setup. Him telling you there is no harness means that the starter should be sitting on the motor however I cannot spot it. Another way is you can look at yours where the rotor attatches to the crankshaft (I assume its a similiar setup to the r6) you can turn the motor over by hand. Hook up a ratchet with the proper extension and socket and you should be good to go to manually crank over compression (with a squirt of oil in each cylinder before you crank for lubrication). Only reason I am warning you is I bought a used R6 motor that has great compression after I swapped my old head onto it (the valves in the head on the new-used motor were stuck open=0 compression=more headaches). Another problem it doesn't look like he had the exhaust or the spark plug holes covered which could mean rust or other debris in the cylinders because no matter where it stopped last time it was run I guaruntee one of those exhaust valves and one of those intake valves are open (which may remain open if its been sitting a while). The difference between the way I bought mine and the way you are buying yours is mine did not have a cam case cover or a couple of other covers for that matter. It was owned by a shop before me though so I dunno with these used motors its hit or miss. But I would at least check more then a visual for the sake of saving you headaches later.

P.S. the headgasket to swap heads costed me another 50 bucks so I hope you have more then the 500 to put in this in case it turns out you need more work. If you dont feel comfortable 300 to install a motor is not bad, however I personally did it myself and to save myself 300 bucks. I think it was worth it.

thanks for all the info....
i'll probably end up making a trip up there to 1. check out the motor and 2. buy it if everything checks out.

i'll see about manually cranking the motor.

that was the one thing i was worried about because in the pictures it does look like the motor wasn't covered while in storage so rust would definitely be a deal breaker. should be able to easily spot it if i bring a flashlight along with me.

i do have more than $500 to invest....but obviously I'd like to keep it to a minimum.

as far as trusting the guy....i had a long (1 hour plus conversation) with the guy on the phone today and he sounds like an honest guy. ended up talking about motorcycles, where he grew up, his old bikes, etc etc.

update:

so the guy is going to try and take some pictures of the inside of the motor.
the intake / exhaust holes were all plugged up with shop towels while the motor was in storage so that's good news.
he's also going to run a compression test later today and get back to me.

Sorry for dropping that all on you, I just want to help people not wind up with all the problems I had. In all honesty the motor looks super clean as if it was taken care of and I would be suprised if he could get the pictures of the inside without like a borescope or something similiar. But sounds like he is a stand up guy and I hope the project goes smoothly and without a hitch and it runs as good or better then your old motor.

no worries hellraiser! thanks for keeping an eye out!

he took a compression and leak test today and they all came out fine.....pictures for proof Cheesy

Plugs 1 and 3. I dont know what happen to the pic for #2 but it looks the same. the junk on the threads is anti-seize

Compression test just done today March 28 2010. Had to crank the motor by hand so they may be lower than what they should be.
