Just wanted to let everyone know, there's been some suspicious guys around the Muir college motorcycle lot. Just yesterday there was a Golden brown Dodge 1500 Truck that was circling the east Muir lot around 5:15. I waited there at my bike and watched the truck park right next to the motorcycle parking. Three guys got out of the truck. One started walking up and looking at different bikes that were parked there, one grabbed what looked like a toolkit and opened the bed of the truck and the other walked to the middle of the lot. I decided to turn my bike off and wait there and called the campus cops. After about 5 minutes they came back to the truck, sat in it, and watched me while I was on the phone with campus police. They left after another 5 minutes or so and completely left the school. Just keep your eyes open and watch out for each other. This is the second time I've seen suspicious characters around the Muir lot. Remember the campus police number is 858-534-HELP

Good lookin out bro, I'll be sure to keep on the lookout for shady people around muir - which lot in muir? that smaller one on the north side? Or that bigger one close to housing?

Good job.  Maybe I'll start lugging around my camera again.  I'd love to see the face on these guys when I start taking their pics.

Damn that's whack man! I hope those fools get caught soon. Anyways, my way of TRYING to hold on to my bike you guys is when I park it in a lot, I try to park near a pole or something and use my cable lock to lock it on to the pole. Eyes open out there yall, on and off the road now.

Seriously, good lookin' out. That's really shady business. Glad I hide my lot in one of those secret motorcycle parking lots that even the parking enforcement leave alone!  Grin

OMG I wanna catch these idiots...I love parking at Muir! It totally saves the walk to RBC Sad

Personal Story:

Last year my 07 gsxr 600 was targeted in an attempted robbery. I had a nice motorcycle cover over my bike and a thick 25 lbs Onguard Chain tied around the rear wheel to the metal posts by the Garbage Dump, at the parking lot next to the Gilman Parking Lot. When I found my bike my motorcycle cover had been stolen, and my key lock on my Onguard Chain was tampered with. It looked like they tried to use a screwdriver to pry the plastic off the chain lock, but then couldn't into my chain so they left my bike. I reported it to the UCSD Police...who recovered nothing (typical) and told me that they'd keep an eye out. Really THE BEST EYE ARE OUR EYES. Take pictures guys with your cell phones! Mainly write down or take a picture of the license plate!

The police officer told me that the most thefts for motorcycles, which usually involves 2 or 3 guys picking up the bike and placing it in the back of a van (which they then part out when they get home), happens most frequently INSIDE Gilman Parking Structure & Pangea Parking Structure (reason why I never park there).

If you're like me, you're paranoid about your baby and i'd appreciate the community's help to catch these pricks. Nice citing Cmpfreak88! Thanks!

P.S. Lojack really doesn't help much because they take it to a remote location so it can't be detected. In order for the Lojack to recover it, a police vehicle with a scanner driving by must be within radius!

Ok, seriously, I hate thieves. That shit is ridiculous. They cant have something nice like ours, so they just take what isnt theirs. For some of us, its our only ride and all of our savings put into. That sucks when someone decides to fucking steal it! What kind of shit is that?

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS watch out for them bastards. Make sure you lock your steering too guys. That just makes it that much harder.

No matter what you guys think, a motorcycle cover, a disk lock, a chain lock, theyre all great ways to try and protect your dream, but if the theif wants it bad enough, they can get it. The only for sure protection that you have is getting insurance to cover it if its gone. Thats all you really can do.

To the guy above me:
I am INSANELY paranoid about my bike. I hate it when people go near it or look at it. Ive told a few people off because I dont like them being around my bike.

I have always wanted to buy a motorcyle cover that has a blown up picture of my face on it.

Below the picture, it would read:

If you see anyone other than this person (so pictured) touch this motorcycle, please "beat the shit out of them"!

The quoted part is obviously interchangeable: "call the police" etc.  Grin

Some alarms may be useful.
In the second scooter I did have (and already sold), and alarm device was installed. It only worked when on the central stand (it was beeping if left on the side stand). I ended up not activating it because even a week raining activated the alarm (yeah, sounds stupid, I know). I could not use it in the campus either, because the parking lot was so crowded that it would be beeping all the time. But it gave me peace in mind when parking in other places. I guess the sensibility is adjustable, but I just felt lazy to bring it to the store to fix it. When I asked the price for installing one in my other scooter, it was around 130-150 $, plus the alarm device (80$ as cheapest on internet). Also you can shut off the engine from far away if somebody try to steal and ride it. But if you do have some skills, you may install it by yourself.

In my Honda Rebel, I decided to use two locks (a regular one and a special "high risk zone" one). Since my bike is "naked" it would be to easy to detect the alarm device and cut the cords.

Of course, if anybody really want to steal your bike, they can do it, no matter how many anti-thief devices you install, but at least it make them think on stealing other bike instead of your bike...

LOL

You should look into having that custom made.

Personally covers seem inconvenient to me, then again i dont live on campus and have my bike parked in 1 spot overnight.

Well a cover would just be nice to keep the bike out of the sun and, HOPEFULLY, away from anyones eyes.

Yep, the cover is just one more thing for a thief to waste their time on.  Hopefully they see the cover and decide to keep on cruising until they see something uncovered worth stealing.

Hmm...since the bike would have to be picked up to be put into a van, it'd be awesome of I could hook up the battery to run thru the rails beneath my tail....  I'd love to shock the piss out of a thief, and then kick their teeth in with my toe sliders.

LOL...dude...genius idea - it'd have to be solar powered so that we wouldn't have to keep charging it or worrying about draining (after all we shouldnt be riding when the sun hasn't come out at some point in the day anyways Tongue). LOL hopefully it doesn't shock our balls sitting on it!

The one closer to housing. There were about 10-15 bikes out there that day.
My bike was out there at the time and luckily Mike called me to let me know.
That's the reason why I stopped riding my bike to school (I do have full insurance coverage, but would rather not deal with the hassle)

If I had the time, I'd be done to do a little stakeout and kicking it with some friends in the lot since UCSD does have WiFi coverage and we could just sit in a car and kick it.  Take some license plates down and pictures of some faces. After that, I can just run the suspected plates and see if there is anything related to the drivers, etc.
