So usually you can diagnose a problem based on smell right? My sv650 has been emitting a smell lately (just today). I washed my motorcycle a month ago and it has been out of the rain since then. When I washed it I also thoroughly waxed it. Now, I am positive that the smell isn't from leftover wax. The wax smelled nice and candle-like when I still had it on a month ago and I can assure this smell is nothing like it. I am sure all the wax that may have been on heated components has burned off by now anyway.

What I am smelling right now is similar to smores. Yes, I smell marshmallows and it sort of smells pleasant. It smells like the marshmallows that are singed and brown but not all nasty and charcoal-like typical of 90% of camp-fire smores. One thing that has me worried is probably the fuel in the tank being too low. I am at 190 miles for the current tank and the fuel light has been on for 34 miles.  I've done 205miles on a tank before no problem. If anyone has any info regarding fuel pumps for fuel injected bikes I am all ears because I hear that they can get overworked with too little fuel??

Ps. I checked my shoes and the cotton-like dress pants I had to wear today;  they are not burnt anywhere. Also, I just hope this wasn't some type of cruel Halloween prank involving the exhaust and a fist full of marshmallows. I look forward to the outlandish and practical theories and comments.

Im not entirely sure if your fuel concerns are related to the smells your getting, so if they are, just clarify so I know what the hell Im talking about lol.

Halloween prank is actually pretty possible, but I cant diagnose that one for you.

Actual theories,
1. Check air filter, maybe got something caught in there, including moisture.
2. Check your oil, I dont know how I would describe the smell, but oil being burnt has an interesting smell.

More Questions:
Does it happen all the time you ride? Or just on a cold morning? Or when its wet/damp out?
Also, have you noticed any leaks anywhere? I dont remember, but is your bike the S or N model?

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply, as my response wasn't so punctual. On a more important note, I hope all you guys that are going through rough times are all good. It just seems that there has been a rash of unfortunate incidents for many in the motorcycle community lately. Hopefully we've all gotten past the low point in this cycle because what affects one of us surely might affect the rest!

(Damn this segway by the way.) WUZER: There was nothing in the radiator except a bee. That is a good tip for the general maintenance and other once-overs. PIKAN: No marshmallows! OP: It was only that day and the bike runs normally. The sv doesn't smell anymore so I think that the problem must have been temporarily confined to that last thursday I rode it. A needed oil change is coming up within the month so that might be something. Then again, anyone ever have their oil get smelly? That'd be an interesting poll. Also OP, I rode in the heavy rain a couple times this summer. It could be the air filter so I will check it out. Thanks!

After everything passes, I would be more than obliged to go on a ride with you guys! Vlado, we haven't ridden together since Palomar last year!

if it went away and its running normal, all is well. could have been moisture build up. possible because of a lack of fuel in your tank too. condenses and you start pumpin water with your gas through the cylinders.
